Community books was founded in 2015 by Jorge P. Newbery, a socia justice entrepreneur on a mission to help Americans crushed by unaffordable debts. While breaking the chain of debt may feel like an insurmountable problem, a debt-free life is not out of reach.
Newbery fuses entrepreneurship with a social mission to improve the lives of the 99%.
From keeping families at risk of foreclosure in their homes, providing jobs to hundreds of ex-offenders, to helping overwhelmed debtors achieve financial freedom, Newbery is committed to growing enterprises which generate a profit and transformative societal benefits.
Newbery authored Burn Zones: Playing Life’s Bad Hands, in which he chronicled his rise and fall;
Debt Cleanse: How to Settle Your Unaffordable Debts For Pennies On The Dollar (And Not Pay Some At All) to help families resolve their unaffordable debt;
and Stories of the Indebted, sharing the struggles faced by everyday Americans burdened by debt. He speaks regularly on debt, housing, and finance.
As an athlete, Newbery raced bicycles for a living from 1986 – 1990 as a Category 1.
He competed in the 1988 Olympic Trials; was 4th in the Spenco 500, a nonstop 500-mile bike race televised on ESPN; and raced for the Costa Rican national team in the Tour of Mexico.
Newbery was 2nd in the 1987 Southern California State Championship Road Race, and held the Green Jersey in the 1987 Vulcan Tour.
